Welcome to the Department of Engineering Hydrology

Have fun browsing through our pages!

The teaching and research field of engineering hydrology

has evolved from classical deterministic precipitation flow modelling via the coupling of deterministic and stochastic modules to the current phase of rule-based neuro-fuzzy models.

The employees of the department have profound knowledge in the field of development and application of precipitation runoff models in all spatial and temporal dimensions of established water management issues. The range of models developed extends from quantitatively deterministic water balance models to flood forecasting tools with Kalman filtering. Currently, the focus is on the modelling of fuzzy knowledge contexts.

The coupling of fuzzy logic with neural network methods leads to innovative models that can map both quantitative and qualitative aspects of hydrology. These river basin management models were designed as rule-based forecasting models that incorporate the knowledge of various experts (ecologists, fish experts, morphologists, hydraulic engineers and hydrologists).

The applications to date show that these modelling tools are very well suited to specifically support the current tasks of the EU Water Framework Directive.
