Training-of-Trainers Program in Interdisciplinary Water Management
TOTWAT (Think Interdisciplinary: Training-of-Trainers Program in Interdisciplinary Water Management) is a three-year project funded by the EU under the TEMPUS programme.
Participants of the program
In this project, scientists from the Department of Engineering Hydrology at RWTH Aachen University (grant holder and coordinator), the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna and the Irrigation and Hydraulics Department of Cairo University, the Civil Engineers Department of Fayoum University and the National Water Research Center in Egypt are working together.
The exclusive consideration of the technical aspects of water management in Egypt leads to significant negative impacts on social concerns and the environment. Managers should prefer an interdisciplinary view to a purely disciplinary one. An important point here is to add environmental and socio-economic aspects to the traditional technical perspective.
The main objective of the project is to develop a new interdisciplinary water management training programme for the two Egyptian partner universities. The programme is divided into two sub-programmes, which are implemented at both Egyptian universities. The direct target group of the project are the trainers of the Egyptian universities and the National Water Research Center. The indirect target group is the specialists of the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
The training program consists of different modules. Each module contains different training courses covering IT, technical aspects of water management, socio-economic, environmental and interdisciplinary aspects of water management. In addition to improving the IT and technical skills of trainers, the project aims to improve the IT infrastructure required for the training process. Key project goals include the introduction of new multi-media web-based techniques, the development of a learning platform and the improvement of the skills of the IT administrator team.
A strict framework plan is established to ensure the dissemination and sustainability of the project. The mechanisms of quality control and the monitoring of the processing steps are an integral part of the project. Coordination and contractual matters are the responsibility of the Department of Engineering Hydrography, which works with the other partners to successfully manage the project.
