Water-Energy-Food Nexus – Winter School
The LFI – RWTH Aachen represented by Dr Sewilam together with other EU and Egyptian partner institutions have decided to support the region in this regard. With a funding from the EU TEMPUS program the following partners have started a project entitled “Knowledge Triangle Platform for Water-Energy-Food Nexus”
TriNex aims to create a national platform based on universities joining forces in research, innovation and education activities (Knowledge-triangle) for WEF Nexus. This platform will be a meeting point for researchers from Egypt and Europe in many different displaces who come together to enable Egypt to achieve water, energy and food security.
One of the main activities that is organized annually by the consortium is the PhD winter school on WEF Nexus. The PhD winter school was focused on sharing comprehensive understanding of the interrelation existing among WEF Nexus, with the aim at educating researchers towards new thinking over sustainable solutions.
Over the course of 2 weeks 25 students from partner universities and international students from Morocco, Tunisia, and Austria attended lectures for 90 equivalent hours.
The PhD Winter School provided the attendants the necessary knowledge to work and develop projects in the frame of the WEF Nexus, giving theoretical and practical elements and tools to design appropriate solutions in complex situations: characterized by food insecurity, paying attention to water scarcity and energy availability, such as water management, sustainable farming, and hybrid systems.
Through the practical exercise, attendants learnt the analytical tools to develop, communicate and share the fundamental elements of their research ideas. The outputs of the PhD School work is presented as “Project Competition” during TriNex Annual International Conference which is normally hosted by Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt.
